introTed Baer's Bicycle Wheel Windmill
Ted Baer has created a series of small windmills designed for third world use over a period of three decades. This first in the series has evoved in simplicity and power. The aluminum vanes are constructed from a building flashing roll utilizing the pre-existing bend of the roll in construction. Two 16 " sections are rivited together to make one vane. The vanes clip on the spokes of the bicycle wheel using a "bent nail" and a bend in the vane. Detailed pictures will be provided shortly. The generator is a surplus permanent magnet motor and the endless belting is purchased to length from online sources.

Output is a respectable 2 amps at 12 mph providing a cost effective alternative to a solar photovoltaic panels (if wind is available). The total cost of the windmill is less than $80 purchasing most items new (off-the-shelf).

step 1Testing
The test rig is a Windstar van with top rack and platform. The tripod is a roof TV antenna mount. Windspeed, volts and amps are taken and recorded with a digital camera. Video clips will be provided shortly.

step 2Vane attachment
The vanes attach by folding the aluminum flashing over one spoke and hooking a bent nail around a second spoke, The bent nail is inserted through a drilled hole in the vane.

Hi, I'm trying to add a windmill to run a pond pump at Inverness CA. Saw this at the Make Faire and am trying to contact Mr Baer. Can you help? Thanks and all that. Al Tabor

The only windmill that's ever generated any power through me old bones is the one at the entrance to the Moulin Rouge in Paris. When I come a walkin' through that door in me snakeskin boots along with ma fiddle, them Can-Can girls done stop dead in they tracks. I jump up on that stage and start a whalin' on me fiddle!

I had a fiddle as a young boy, but I done run over it on me bicycle after seeing the local girls a skinny dippin' in the swimmin' hole down near me house. I played the fiddle with one string back then and I have the same set up on me new fiddle.

I gots plans for a fiddle generator. I'll post 'em soon. It's a fiddle with an electrical cord comin' out of it. That cord connects to an old V8 automobile engine coil which then transforms the voltage from me furious fiddle playin' into 27,000 volts of electricity!!! I'm a gonna contact some dignitaries like Ted Kennedy, Hilary Rodham Clinton, Howard Dean, and Mayor Nagin ta help me git some fundin' for this here invention.

I was a watchin' some crazy fools on television jumpin' off cliffs on them home-made gliders. Built me own glider. It's got two wind-mills (like the ones Ted Baer uses) attached to the top which start spinnin' like giant egg-beaters once the glider is a sailin' in the sky. I got 'em wired to a couple a high-voltage filter caps which I think store the E-lec-tricity. I'm a gonna get a bunch of crazy folks to go fly me glider so as I can make a fortune sellin' me electricity!

Does he have more details available? I would love to see information on his generator selection and how those vanes actually "mount" to the bicycle wheel.
